Cape boys’ lax sizzles Spartans on Saturday morning 19-3

Vikings will host Caesar Rodney in May 29 semifinals

The Cape boys’ lacrosse team came out white-hot May 25 for an 11 a.m. game at Legends Stadium, sizzling the Spartans of Saint Mark’s 19-3 in the DIAA quarterfinal round. 

The Vikings led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter and 13-2 at halftime.The clock ran uninterrupted in the second half, as Cape secured a 19-3 victory to enjoy over the long Memorial Day weekend. 

Cape will host Caesar Rodney at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, in a semifinal game. The Riders beat Tatnall in the quarterfinals 7-6. 

Cape beat Caesar Rodney 17-6 during the regular season April 16 at Rider Stadium powered by dual three-goal games from Burke Healy and Anderson Smith.  

The other semifinal game will feature Archmere at Salesianum.

The state championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday, June 1, at Delaware Military Academy.

"We just play hard and play who’s in front of us," said Cape coach Geoff  Shupard after the Vikings’ third consecutive win in money games by a combined score of 61-4. “We know what’s coming and so does everyone who follows the sport in Delaware.”

Healy had seven goals and three assists against Saint Mark’s. Anderson Smith and Mike Guenther each had three goals, while Evan Burris tallied two. Single goals were scored by Jack Schell, Ryan Morgan, Braddock Smith and Davis Mault.

Goalies Mason Trench, Gus Musika and Patrick Little combined for four saves.

Notes: Cape lost at home to Caesar Rodney 10-9 in 2013 and followed that with an 11-8 loss to the Riders in the state semifinals in a game played at Milford. Cape ran it back on the Riders in 2015, winning 6-5 in the regular season and 9-8 in a semifinal played at Caravel. Many coaches on the Cape staff were around for all those games. The high school boys’ national top 25 published by usalacrosse.com has Salesianum ranked sixth in the country.
