The City of Lewes has proclaimed May 3 as Historic Lewes Farmers Market Day, celebrating the opening of the organization’s 20th market season.
The proclamation from Lewes Mayor and City Council recognizes the farmers market as an integral part of Lewes’ special character, stating, “In its 20th year, the market continues to provide a family-friendly gathering place where people meet and gather to purchase the freshest local foods available, helping small regional farms market directly to consumers, and promote sustainable agriculture practices.”
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will ring in its 2025 season at 8 a.m., Saturday, May 3, at George H.P. Smith Park.
The HLFM will be celebrating this milestone all year long with special event days, new T-shirts for kids and adults, additional collaborations with local chefs and restaurants, hosting plein air artists at Saturday markets, new 20th anniversary commemorative market tote bags and more.
The HLFM asks Lewes residents to join in the celebration by displaying a yard sign featuring the 20th market season tagline – Eat Fresh, Stay Rooted, Love Local – to show their support. Anyone interested in getting a yard sign is asked to call the HLFM office directly at 302-644-1436 or email info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.
The Lewes Oyster House will host a special farm dinner Sunday, May 18, highlighting local ingredients from featured market farmers in support of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market and its programs to purchase produce from local small farmers and provide fresh food for hungry people in Southern Delaware.
