Local students excel at universities

Local students inducted into collegiate honor society 

Lewes residents Emily Simon and Sean Affayroux were recently initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Simon was initiated at James Madison University. Affayroux was initiated at Old Dominion University.

Membership is by invitation only, and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.

Hearn named to CSC Academic All-District Team

Kutztown University women's basketball announced Abbey Hearn of Lewes was placed on the 2024-25 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

Hearn is currently pursuing a master's degree in business administration and holds a 3.84 GPA after graduating with her bachelor's degree in sport management (3.74 GPA) in May 2024. 

Hearn earned PSAC Championship MVP honors after back-to-back 30-plus-point games in a semifinal victory over nationally ranked Gannon and a championship game victory over host Edinboro. She finished the season averaging 10.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while appearing in 33-of-34 overall (12 starts). Hearn also led the team in blocks (39) and added 48 assists. 

Hearn was selected to advance to the Academic All-America ballot, with results to be announced Wednesday, April 16.

Locals named to William & Mary dean’s list

The College of William & Mary announced local students Alexander Wiggins of Lewes and Katharine Moore of Rehoboth Beach were named to its spring dean’s list for achieving a 3.6 GPA or higher.
