Cape girls’ lax improves to 10-0-1, but faces tough games to close out season

Since a mysterious all-game running-clock 9-9 tie with Marriotts Ridge of Maryland, the Cape girls’ lacrosse team has beaten Dover, Archmere and North Caroline by a combined score of 58-7. 

The last of those games, April 28, Cape handled North Caroline 19-4. 

“A lot of lacrosse left to play in Delaware in the regular season,” said coach Lindsey Underwood. “We have a tough game at Ocean City High in New Jersey [May 1], then host Germantown Friends of Philadelphia Saturday [May 3]. Both of those teams are perennial winners in their conferences.”

Cape got scoring from 11 different players, including Macy Steinwedel with four, Claire Lopez and Haley Gamuciello with three each and Makenzie Todd with two. Single goals were scored by Avary Miller, Amara Fruchtman, Ally Diehl, Mairead Rishko, Mikaela Gordon, Regan Best and Lina Frederick.

Assist leaders were Lopez with four, Diehl with two and Steinwedel and Best with one each.

Cape goalie Abbey Schaeffer had three saves, while Daisy Mastriana tallied one. 

The varsity record is now 10-0-1.

The Cape JV team ran its season record to 8-2 with consecutive wins over Archmere 14-4 and North Caroline 16-0.

Cape goal scorers against North Caroline were Alexis Zolper with four, Cora Conway with three and Tegan Paczek and Kemper Cox with two. Single goals were scored by Madison Rice, Jillian Leach, Angelina McCarthy, Reagan Nelson and Lindsay Gross. 

Blair Chubb had two assists. Lelia Hughes was credited with eight saves.
